About the site

Hi everyone,

Thanks for clicking onto my blog, ‘My Special Stays’ which is a personal guide to the best places to stay, the world over. I have been an avid traveller since I was a little boy, and have always enjoyed the excitement of meeting new people, discovering new cultures and uncovering hidden gems.

The aim of the blog is not to present to you the kind of information you will be able to find on any hotel website, but rather to give you a more personal account of my experiences staying in what I consider to be the best places in the world. Often these will be highly starred hotels, but sometimes you will see I have included places that haven’t achieved a high star rating but nonetheless have attributes that make it unique, special and brilliant. That may be the quality and friendliness of service, the character of the building, the exquisite food or the particularly beautiful natural setting. Elements that may not be obvious as you’re browsing though booking.com with your filter settings on, looking for places that tick the right boxes.

On the site I will also be covering other elements of luxury travel such as itineraries by sea and rail, which can be a wonderfully romantic way to experience a journey. And of course, I may point you in the direction of any particularly clever or beautiful travel accessories that catch my eye too.

Good food is one of life’s great pleasures, and there is nothing quite as satisfying as being well fed. Wherever I go, am I always on the look out for the best places to eat, and I often speak to the locals to get the inside scoop on where to go. As Tolkien said, ‘If more of us valued food and cheer and song above hoarded gold, it would be a merrier world.’

I hope you will find this blog approachable, interesting and useful for you when you’re making decisions about how to travel across the globe. My aim is to introduce you to places that will enrich your voyage, and leave you with some lasting memories. We’ve all stayed in hotels and B and B’s that we wish we hadn’t booked based on some misleading online information. Reading a 5 star and then 1 star review about the same hotel can be really confusing and leave us wondering who to trust!

As you get to know me through this blog, and try out a few of my recommendations, I hope you will come to share my tastes and experience many Special Stays that will live with you forever.

I look forward to reading your comments and answering any questions you might have.

Thank you for coming on this wonderful journey across the world with me.

Bon Voyage!
